Good Morning!
I would like to let you know that Wednesday’s on my blog will now officially be referred to as ”What is it Wednesday“. Unless you hate it and ask me to stop :) Which I’m fine with! Seriously. Tell me if you do.
So how does it work?
Every Wednesday morning I will include one of the following:
- A picture of something for you to identify (food related!)
- A riddle or a trivia question
So without further ado, here is the first one! I am starting with an easy one :) But don’t you worry… they will get more difficult!

What is it? First one to get it correct wins bragging rights :)
Now let me tell you about my disastrous oats experience! This morning I boiled 1 1/2 cups of water and 1 1/2 cups of milk, and as soon as I added the oats, they boiled over and spilled every where! What a mess. Additionally, the milk seemed to burn and turned into brown slop. This actually happened on Monday as well.
Has this ever happen to anyone else? Is it because I use fat free milk?
I tossed the first batch (I hate wasting!) and tried again, in a bigger pot. Only I didn’t really allow the water to boil all the way because the milk started to burn again. So it ended up taking a bit longer to cook them, because I never let the water boil.
I used the following spices in an attempt to create pumpkin oats.

I didn’t measure any of the spices though. It was just a little here, a little there kind of thing.
My second batch of oats turned out well, but I was still unhappy and perplexed about the milk burning.

And I can’t say I really tasted any of the spices? Even with the added cinnamon on top!

There is definitely a lot of room for improvement :)
At least I finally had big, juicy strawberries!

Tomorrow I will try again!
Question – Do you have any oats disaster stories? Or am I the only joker who can’t make a bowl of oats?

A garlic clove?
Ding, ding, ding! I’ll buy you a drink on Friday :)
No even better, buy me one at beerfest :)
Nice guess! You beat me to it! I guess I will try for next Wednesday to answer first :)
I’ve had many oat disasters–mostly with things getting messy and the taste/texture just being off. Always disappointing! With the spices, I tend to add all of them in after the oats are cooked and in my bowl because I can taste them more. I feel like they just melt away when I put them into the cooking oats!
Love this idea! I am guessing garlic in the photo? Not sure…hmm…
Oats; you used 3 cups of liquid? How much oats? I usually use 1 part oats to 2 parts liquid, maximum and cook them together at the same time.
I add a pinch of salt (makes a BIG difference), very ripe banana (cook it in with the oats and it dissolves) and vanilla extract as well as cinnamon :)
Hey Meg –
when you add the oats – did you make sure you turned down the heat? if you do that and let the oats simmer (maybe on med-low heat) and give them a stir with a spoon that should keep them from boiling over (which happened to me from time to time also – although I don’t use milk, so maybe that’s an issue too)…
Jer- I did turn down the heat before I put the oats in, and the instantaneously exploded. Maybe it’s the kind of pots we have? I am going to try not using milk tomorrow and see what happens.
Hi, I just discovered your blog today, and I am so happy I did! I am a current student at Duke, so I am so excited to read a fellow Durhamite’s blog.
Hello meg!! what a great idea!
okay
(1) GARLIC! i know i am right do not even tell me i am wrong missy- i know garlic when i see it! hahah
(2) OH i have a lovely oat disaster story!) I added cumin instead of cinnamon one time. I was wondering why it was coming out of the shaker in a strange way and then I smelled “fajitas”? haha I quickly realized what I had done and unforunately could not save my oats so i had to start over! interestingly enough this happened to holly @ thehealthyeverythingtarian too!
(3) good luck in my giveaway!!
(4) i had the leftover whole wheat penne with sweet potato and ricotta for lunch yesterday- and i think it was even better than the night i made it- thank you thank you for introducing me to the recipe! I have fresh rosemary left over and plenty of ricotta so i am thinking of making it again soon!
(5) I have nutmeg, pumpkin pie spice, and cinnamon- i do not have allspice- worth buying? try adding raisins and actual pumpkin(if u can find it! ahha) to your oats. and some pb? tomorrow I am trying oats, vanilla unsweetened almond milk, nutmeg/cinnamon/pumpkinpie spice, walnuts, raisins, and banana…wow this comment is a long one!
Ha! Christina you are too funny! Cumin in your oats? Tee hee… Please please please pick my name for your giveaway! I have entered hundreds and have yet to actually win one!:)
def garlic..i’m late commenting but i totes new it was! hahaha..
check out my morning post, i had a not so good attempt at oats this morning :(
I would say maybe start out making oats in the microwave then! Burning milk!?!? Yikes!! I usually use a good amount of spices–cinnamon and/or pumpkin pie spice. There’s no such thing as too much. Except when you pour it in like I did this morning :) Whoops!
